Virgin Australia has placed an order for eight Embraer E190-E2s to be used by regional subsidiary Virgin Australia Regional Airlines, replacing it’s fleet of Fokker 100s.
The regional airline currently operates seven Airbus A320s and three Fokker 100s. Virgin Australia operates only in Asia-Oceana, after ceasing long-haul international operations (operated by Airbus A330-300s and Boeing 777-300ERs) in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the mainline airline operates a fleet of exclusively Boeing 737 family aircraft, with the -700, -800 and Max 8 variants, with orders for the Max 10 awaiting the aircrafts certification and entry into commercial service.
Virgin Australia says the E190-E2 will offer an approximate 30% fuel saving on its sectors compared to the outgoing Fokker 100s. the first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in October 2025.
