US-based ultra low-cost and leisure airline Allegiant Air has placed an order for 50 Boeing 737 Max airplanes.

It becomes Allegiant’s first ever direct order with Boeing and reportedly consists of 30 737 Max 7, the shortest version of the Max family, as well as 20 high-density 737 Max 200. The order further includes purchase options for 50 more 737 Max planes.

This announcement also makes Allegiant the first customer for the Boeing 737 Max 200 in North America. The variant is based on the Max 8, but is certified to carry more passengers, enabling ultra low-cost carriers (ULCC) to use an even denser seat layout. It is currently in service with European low-cost carrier Ryanair and its subsidiaries.

Today, the fleet of Allegiant Air consists exclusively of more than 100 total Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. The airline also operated McDonnell-Douglas MD-80 until late-2018, but it is yet to operate the Boeing 737 family.
