Frankfurt Hahn Airport in Western Germany has entered insolvency proceedings on Tuesday, 19th October.
The airport, coded by the IATA as HHN, is located in the Hunsrück region, west of Frankfurt. It is primarily used by low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, as well as various cargo airlines. Despite its name suggesting proximity to the city, the airport is actually a 90-minute drive away from Frankfurt.
The insolvency proceedings are not expected to have an impact on planned flights for the time being. Airport operator Flughafengesellschaft Frankfurt-Hahn GmbH and its subsidiaries have been majority-owned by struggling Chinese conglomerate HNA Group through its subsidiary HNA Airport Group GmbH since 2017.
In 2019, about 1.5 million passengers used the airport. In addition, Hahn has served different intercontinental cargo airlines, handling aircraft such as the Boeing 747-400F on a regular basis. More than 170,000 metric tons of cargo passed through HHN in 2019, according to the airport.
