Lufthansa Cargo has operated its final McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter flight. The tri-jet leaves the fleet after more than 23 years.
The carrier’s last MD-11 with registration D-ALCC, which was at the same time the last MD-11 aircraft registered in Europe, will be sold to an American freighter company. It operated its last flight for Lufthansa Cargo from New York (JFK) to Frankfurt, where it arrived on Sunday. The final flight was postponed several times due to last-minute schedule changes.
Lufthansa Cargo received its first three-engined MD-11 freighter jet in June 1998. Over 23 years later, it will be replaced by twin-engine Boeing 777F with a better fuel efficiency compared to the MD-11.
From now on, Lufthansa Cargo will rely on an all-Boeing 777F fleet. In total, the carrier has eleven Boeing freighter jets in its fleet. Besides the 777 jets, Lufthansa CityLine will start to operate two Airbus A321P2F aircraft (‘Passenger to freighter conversion’) on behalf of Lufthansa Cargo in 2022. The two Airbus jets will also be based in Frankfurt.
