Danish logistics company Maersk has ordered two new 777 freighter aircraft from Boeing for its air freight subsidiary Star Air.
Additionally, Maersk has signed leasing agreements for three more Boeing 767-300 freighters, also set to be operated by its airline subsidiary. Star Air currently operates a fleet of 14 Boeing 767 freighters, 11 of which are of the 767-200 model and three of the larger 767-300. These aircraft primarily operate flights for UPS and the Royal Mail from hubs in Cologne and East Midlands, as well as flights on behalf of its parent company Maersk throughout Europe.
“Maersk is improving the ability to provide one-stop shop and end-to-end logistics capabilities to our customers. […] We are now ramping up our air freight capacity, creating a broader network”, says Vincent Clerk, Maersk Executive Vice President and CEO for the company’s Ocean & Logistics department, in a statement.
Founded as a sea freight operator in 1904, Maersk has grown to become the world’s largest operator of container ships with over 700 ships registered to the company. Maersk is increasingly investing into other logistics areas, including e-commerce and warehouses.
