The Nigerian start-up airline Green Africa Airways has announced a commitment for up to 100 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft today. According to current list prices, the agreement is worth more than $11 billion and includes 50 firm aircraft and 50 options.
Green Africa Airways will be based in Lagos, Nigeria and has already received its Air Transport License from the Nigerian Government. The start-up has also applied for an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The airline was founded in 2016 by Babawande Afolabi, a former Morgan Stanley banker. The airline’s management consists of a group of senior industry leaders. For example, Tom Horton, the former Chairman and CEO of American Airlines, and William Shaw, founder and former CEO of VivaColombia, have joined Green African Airways.
