Faroe-based Atlantic Airways has submitted an application for commercial services to the United States under the Air Transport Agreement between the US and the government of Denmark (‘Open Skies Agreement‘).
The airline plans to start a scheduled seasonal service between Vagar, Faroe Islands (FAE) and the New York City area, beginning in late summer 2019. No carrier presently operates flights between the United States of America and the Faroe Islands, a small autonomous country part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but not a member of the European Union.
Atlantic Airways intends to deploy an Airbus A320neo aircraft on this service. The first A320neo for the airline is expected to arrive in March 2019. Atlantic Airways’ current fixed-wing fleet consists of two Airbus A319 and one A320.
The national airline of the Faroe Islands was established in 1987 and currently operates flights to various destinations in Europe, including Copenhagen and Edinburgh from its base at Vagar Airport. The proposed service to New York will open a new market to travellers in both the U.S. and the Faroe Islands.
