Alaska Airlines has officially been invited to join the Oneworld airline alliance. The Seattle-based carrier is set to become Oneworld’s 14th member airline and the second member in the United States.
This move is part of a deeper cooperation between Alaska Airlines and fellow Oneworld member American Airlines, which was announced in February this year. After that, the airline was elected as a Oneworld member designate following approval by the Oneworld Governing Board. A formal invitation by the alliance has now been extended to the airline. Alaska Airlines could join later this year.
The airline already has codeshare agreements with many Oneworld members, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines and Qantas. Furthermore, it codeshares with Oneworld’s connect partner Fiji Airways.
Alaska Airlines and its regional partners serve more than 115 destinations in North America and maintain hubs in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland (Oregon) and Anchorage. Together with its subsidiaries, the airline operates a fleet of over 300 aircraft, including the Airbus A320 family, Boeing 737, Embraer E175 and DeHavilland DHC-8.
