On the second day of the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow, Japan Airlines has finalised an order with Airbus for 21 A350-900 and eleven A321neos, which was first announced in March of 2024.
Japan Airlines already operates 15 A350-900 from an initial order of 19, which was the first time the airline has operated an Airbus Aircraft since the A300 was retired in 2011. The order consists of 20 standard orders with a single addition (the 21st) which is to replace the airframe that was lost on 2nd January when a JAL A350-900 collided with a Dash-8 on the runway during landing at Tokyo Haneda.
It also operates three of the larger A350-1000 (with ten more still to be delivered), the first of which entered service in January 2024, alongside introducing new versions of all of its cabins. Today’s order takes JAL’s A350 fleet to a total of 52 orders.
Additionally, the airline has ordered eleven single-aisle A321neo, the airlines first ever single-aisle Airbus order. These will join an order of 21 Boeing 737 Max 8 for the airlines narrow-body fleet upgrade.
This is the second order from the Japanese flag carrier from the show, coming the day after it placed an order with Boeing for 10 787-9 Dreamliners.
