United Airlines and Boeing have announced a firm order for 200 new aircraft; 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 100 Boeing 737 Max family jets. Furthermore, the deal includes options for an additional 100 Boeing 787 airplanes.
While the variants are yet to be specified, it is the largest ever wide body order from a US airline and largest ever order for the Boeing 787. The airline will use these new aircraft, which will be delivered over an 8-year period from 2024 onwards, to replace its aging fleet of Boeing 767-300ER, 767-400 and 777-200/ER. The new aircraft will join the airline’s already 66-aircraft strong Boeing 787 fleet, with a further five on order from Boeing.
In addition to the 100 new Boeing 787s, United has also converted 44 existing options for the 737 Max family into firm orders and opted to purchase a further 56 directly from Boeing. This order further strengthens United’s status as the largest customer for the type, with an existing order book of nearly 350 aircraft and 73 already operational.
With this latest order, United Airlines is now expecting to take delivery of over 700 new aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing to replace and expand its already extensive fleet and to further cement its position as one of the leading US airlines.
