Alaska Airlines and Boeing have announced that the Seattle-based airline has chosen to order 23 additional Boeing 737 MAX and secure options for 15 more.
The carrier has again opted for the 737 MAX 9, the second longest MAX variant. It will configure the type with 178 seats in a three-class configuration.
An initial order for 32 planes and 32 options was signed back in 2012. Only one month ago, Alaska Airlines signed a leasing agreement for a further 13 aircraft of this type. This latest order, officially signed between the two companies on December 18th, adds on top of the existing agreements and brings the airline’s total to 68, with purchase options for another 52.
Boeing will deliver 13 737 MAX to Alaska Airlines in 2021, followed by 30 in 2022. These new deliveries will mostly replace Airbus A320 family planes that are part of Alaska’s fleet since the acquisition of Virgin America. By summer 2023, all Airbus A319 and A320 will be replaced, with only 10 A321neo remaining.
