German carrier Lufthansa has announced that it will reactivate parts of its Airbus A380 fleet.
The airline cites an increased travel demand in 2023 and delayed aircraft deliveries (such as the Boeing 777-9) as reasons for the reactivation.
Lufthansa is currently assessing how many A380 jets will be reactivated and which destinations the largest Airbus will fly to in summer 2023. In the pre-pandemic flight schedule, Lufthansa deployed the 509-seat airplane mostly on routes to Asia and North America from its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.
The airline decided to phase out the A380 airplane in 2021 and stored the jets in Spain and France. Six A380s have already been sold, but up to eight A380s are potential candidates for a reactivation. In the next three years, Lufthansa plans to add more Airbus A350-900, as well as its first Boeing 787 and 777-9 widebody airplanes.
