SAS Scandinavian Airlines has presented the first routes that will be operated by its brand new Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft. The A350 jet is expected to be delivered by the end of 2019.
Following delivery, the carrier will conduct training flights in Scandinavia during December and January to educate pilots and crew. Starting on January 28th, 2020, SAS will deploy the new aircraft type on its long-haul service between Copenhagen and Chicago.
SAS announced that the A350 will be based at its hub at Copenhagen Airport. During the first year, the aircraft will operate on seven routes, including Chicago, Beijing, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong and San Francisco.
As a part the airline’s modernization of the short and long-haul fleet, the founding member of the Star Alliance will take delivery of new Airbus A320neo, Airbus A330, Airbus A350, and Airbus A321LR aircraft before the end of 2023.
The airline’s hubs are located in the three Scandinavian capital cities Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo. Its long-haul flights are currently operated by Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft, whereas the short- and medium-haul flights are operated by Airbus planes (A319, A320ceo, A320neo and A321), as well as Boeing 737 aircraft. Furthermore, the airline wet-leases ATR 72-600s and Bombardier CRJ jets from regional operators.
