Swiss has announced that it will add two new destinations to its long-haul route network. Starting in March 2020, Switzerland’s flag-carrier will commence flights from Zurich to Washington DC and Osaka.
The airline’s new daily route to the US capital will be operated by Airbus A330s, whereas A340s will be deployed on the new five-times-weekly service to Osaka. Japan’s third largest city is set to become the carrier’s second Japanese destination.
Furthermore, two brand new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which were ordered in May 2018, will enter service in the first quarter of 2020. With the additional jets, Swiss will deploy the 777 on its routes to Tokyo and Miami, starting next year. The routes were previously operated by Airbus A330 and A340 jets that will be used on the new routes to Washington and Osaka, once the new Boeing 777 aircraft arrive.
The airline’s current widebody fleet consists of Airbus A330-300, A340-300 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Many older A340s have already been retired and replaced by new generation 777 jets, whereas the remaining A340 aircraft are being refurbished.
