Indonesian airline Lion Air has taken delivery of its first Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, registered as PK-LEI. The low-cost carrier becomes the first operator of the Airbus A330neo jet in the Asia-Pacific region.
Lion Air’s A330-900neo is configured for 436 passengers in a single-class configuration and will be used by Lion Air for long-haul services from Indonesia, including pilgrimage flights from Indonesia to Jeddah and Medina in Saudi Arabia. The aircraft is on lease from BOC Aviation and is the first of 10 A330neos to join the airline’s fleet.
Lion Air already operates a total of three Airbus A330-300 jets. In addition to the A330s, the carrier’s fleet consists of Boeing 737-800, 737-900ER and 737 MAX 8 aircraft. On October 29, 2018, one of the airline’s Boeing 737 MAX jets crashed into the ocean shortly after takeoff. All 189 people on board were killed. A few months later, a Boeing 737 MAX of Ethiopian Airlines crashed six minutes after takeoff, leading to the worldwide grounding of all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
