Nigerian start-up airline Green Africa Airways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 50 Airbus A220-300.
While this is not a firm order yet, the deal marks the largest ever commitment to the A220 from the African continent. It was signed at the Singapore Airshow 2020. A delivery schedule has not been disclosed.
There are two airlines from Africa already operating the new aircraft type, which was initially developed by Canadian manufacturer Bombardier under the name ‘CSeries’. EgyptAir has eight A220-300 in its fleet, with four more on order, while Air Tanzania currently operates two of the same aircraft type, with another two due for delivery.
Green Africa signed a commitment for up to 100 Boeing 737 MAX 8 in December 2018 (including 50 options), but this deal has not been firmed up yet. It was not immediately clear whether the MoU for Airbus’ A220 would replace the airline’s previous intention to add the 737 MAX.
The Lagos-based start-up airline is yet to announce a launch date for its operations.
