US-based low-cost carrier Breeze Airways has ordered an additional 20 Airbus A220-300, on top of its existing order for 60 of the type. The previously undisclosed order makes the newcomer to the US airline market the second biggest customer of the Airbus A220 family, after Delta Air Lines which has ordered 95 A220 aircraft.
Breeze Airways’s first A220-300 has already rolled out of the paint hangar in Mobile, Alabama, wearing its all-blue livery. It is scheduled for delivery later this year, with the first revenue flight expected at some point during Q2 in 2022. Airbus says its Mobile production site will deliver approximately one A220 per month to Breeze over the coming six and a half years.
The airline plans to utilize the range of the A220 and is already exploring potential future routes to Europe and Latin America. In May 2021, Breeze launched operations with used Embraer E190 and E195 previously operated by Azul, an airline also founded by Breeze Airways CEO David Neeleman. Breeze’s business model consists of regular commercial flights between underserved markets at an affordable price. It currently employs 13 aircraft on routes from its four focus cities in Charleston, SC; New Orleans, LA; Norfolk, VA and Tampa, FL.
