On the first day of the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow, South Korea’s flag carrier Korean Air has announced firm orders with Boeing for 20 Boeing 777-9 and 20 787-10s, with options for a further 10 of the following.
The airline already operates 14 Boeing 787-9s, and 25 of the previous generation Boeing 777-300ER. Additionally, Korean air is starting to receive its first of 20 787-10s that were originally ordered at the Paris Airshow in 2019. With the introduction of the -10 variant, Korean is also introducing a new Business Class cabin.
In March of 2024, Korean Air placed an order for 27 Airbus A350-1000 and six of the smaller A350-900. As Airbus’ current largest offering, the A350-1000 is considered the closest competitor to the Boeing 777-9. Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air said in a press conference that he is confident in Boeing’s ability to deliver the aircraft on time, with deliveries expected to begin in 2028, with the 777-9 and A350-1000 serving different markets.
