Vietnamese low-cost carrier VietJet Air has placed an order for 20 Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The order consists of a new firm order for 15 aircraft and the conversion of five A321neo aircraft.
According to Airbus, the order for the A321XLR version was finalised in August 2019 and included in its order book as an ‘undisclosed customer’.
In November 2018, the airline signed for another 50 Airbus A321neo. Therefore, its outstanding orders are entirely composed of A321neo and A321XLR aircraft. Besides the ‘new engine’ (neo) version of the A321, VietJet’s current fleet includes Airbus A320ceo and A321ceo aircraft.
In addition to the Airbus airplanes, the carrier placed a firm order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX jets in February 2019, shortly before the crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302, which led to the worldwide grounding of the aircraft type. In total, VietJet currently has 200 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes on order.
