Qantas Freight has received its first of two Boeing 747-8F cargo aircraft. The type is due to replace the airline’s current Boeing 747-400F planes.
Both 747-8F were ordered in April this year and are operated by US-based air cargo specialist Atlas Air in a wet-lease agreement with Qantas Freight. The aircraft will fly between Australia, China and the United States in the regular Atlas Air livery but feature additional Qantas Freight titles and logos.
The 747-8F is the newest and also largest freighter in Boeing’s 747 ‘Jumbojet’ aircraft family. It has a 20 percent higher capacity than the previous generation 747-400F, according to Qantas.
Qantas Freight recently extended its partnership with Australia Post by seven years. The Australian cargo airline will become the launch customer of Airbus’ A321P2F (Passenger to Freighter conversion) aircraft in late-2020.
