Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX) has been given approval to construct a third runway in order to meet future passenger numbers. The runway should finish construction by 2030 and will cost a total of 9.35 billion yuan (US $1.39 billion).

The Chinese airport has estimated that by 2030 it will be serving over 80 million yearly passengers. This is up from the 49.3 million passengers traveled through the airport in 2018. Shenzhen Airport will also have more cargo going through it with an estimate of 2.6 million tonnes of freight annually.

The new runway will be situated parallel and to the west of the existing west runway (16/34). It will have a length of 3600 metres (11,811 ft) and be 60 metres (197 ft) wide. This makes it the second largest runway at the Airport, with the existing ones being 3400m by 45m and 3800m by 60m in size.

Located just 35 kilometres (24mi) south of Shenzhen Airport, Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is also in the process of building a new third runway as a part of a 144 billion HKD (US $18.5 billion) investment. This new runway will be completed in 2024 and is set to increase the airport capacity from the current 75 million passengers per year to over 100 million per year.
