Germany’s largest airline Lufthansa and its low-cost subsidiary Eurowings have announced new long-haul routes for the summer season in 2020. Both carriers will commence new services from Munich and Frankfurt, with a focus on new routes to North America.
Starting next year, Lufthansa will inaugurate a new flight from its hub at Munich airport to Bengaluru in India. Additionally, Seattle and Detroit will also be added to the route network from Munich in Summer 2020. All three routes are scheduled to be operated by Lufthansa’s Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The airline already offers non-stop services from Frankfurt to these cities.
Furthermore, Lufthansa will offer additional new routes in cooperation with Eurowings. The low-cost airline will fly from Munich to Las Vegas and Orlando. Airbus A330s will be deployed on the flights to both destinations.
In addition to the new connections from Munich, Lufthansa will expand the long-haul operations from Frankfurt by adding two new flights to the US. Similar to the aforementioned routes from Munich, the new services from Frankfurt will also be operated in cooperation with Eurowings, which commences long-haul operations from Frankfurt in October. Starting in 2020, the German low-cost airline will fly from Frankfurt to Anchorage in Alaska and Phoenix in Arizona. Both routes are already operated by competitor Condor with Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, whereas Eurowings will operate A330s on the routes.
Although the Lufthansa Group announced in June that Eurowings will drop its long-haul services, the Group will continue to use the Eurowings brand for low-cost long-haul services. Airbus A330s will be used on Eurowings’ long-haul routes. All long-haul flights under the low-cost carrier’s branding are operated by other airlines of the Lufthansa family, for example by Brussels Airlines.
